Weather Conditions: Clear skies, cloud on the horizon

Description: I awoke with my one year old son and sat on the lounge with him to give him a bottle. I looked out the window and saw what I thought was the moon with a really unique cloud formation spiralling off it. I went out on our deck and could see an oval shaped light about a quarter of the size of what I'd expect a full moon to be with the same brightness. The cloud seemed to be spiralling off/around the light much like the colours from the centre of a large lollipop. I went inside and got the camera but I couldn't get a focus to get a shot. It was moving at a constant slow speed but it was a distance away and disappeared after around 90 seconds behind trees to the horizon. Once it disappeared I only then realised that the moon was out directly overhead, obscured by the roof of our deck. I'd love an explanation or to speak to anyone who has witnessed anything similar or the same event.
