Description: Took my dog out in the yard and as I stood on the deck, I noticed a bright light to the east just above the horizon (aprox. 1.5 - 2 inches above the horizon). We have our fair share of traffic in the area due to a flight path to Toronto as well as having our own airport to the east of us.
The first thought that went through my mind was that it was pretty late/early (after 3am) to be out flying circuits as the light looked like a real bright landing light. Then as I watched, I realized that the light was not moving. It just appeared to be stationary...
I decided to sit in a chair and watch it for a bit, then I noticed a smaller plane fly diagonally over the city as if it was avoiding the traffic to the east. Shortly after the plane, I noticed the light start to very slowly float up (please do not say it was a chinese lantern). I continued to watch waiting to see if it was approaching, but nope. It just seemed to float up. There are powerlines that cross behind us and I was able to see the light pass behind the lines as it went up. At that moment I woke my wife to see it. She looked with binoculars and could not distinguish any shape, just a bright light. I looked through the binoculars after her and couldn't see a shape or any flashing avoidance lights.
We just stood and watched it rise up into the night sky. The bright light slowly turned into a smaller light equivalent to that of a star. The event lasted aprox. 20 to 30 mins...we went back to bed at 3:45am. Later Friday afternoon (after 6ish), two CF18's slowly cruised above in wing formation, and Saturday morning around 1am or so, another single jet slowly cruised by going from south to north. I was outside with a guest when that bird went by.
I was wondering if you have received any other reports regarding this??? The pilot of the small plane (seemed a little larger than a 172, tough to tell) had to see it. A follow up to this would be greatly appreciated...
I should add that I am familiar with aviation having grown up with a father who is a private pilot, with intentions of following his footsteps one day (pretty expensive). I also spend a lot of time watching the traffic over our area, noticing changes in flightpaths and such.
