Weather Conditions: Clear sky

Description: A black spherical object appearing to be possibly 1 to 2 feet in diameter (much like a black balloon with no neck visible) approached from maybe 100 to 300 feet ahead of my car while I headed South on Highway 97. It seemed to be in the range of 50 to 200 feet overhead of my car as I approached it and it did seem to be coming toward my heading at a moderate speed in addition to the speed at which I was approaching it. The object passed directly above me in the opposite direction.

I was a licensed private pilot at the time and was reasonably familiar with common airborne objects including balloons and flying models (the object was most unlikely to be a Chinese lantern as well) and I found the moderate but significant speed at which it approached and passed over me to be abnormal and surprising even when considering near ground level air currents likely at that time of the evening that may propel a floating body.

I expect that during this point of the summer in the area this occurred that there could well be wind currents of several knots in the direction it traveled in at the time of day involved, however, I felt that the object, while moving at not likely more than 50 knots for sure, did seem to be traveling faster than I deemed to be expected for any wind carried item at its location. After the object passed over me I looked behind me in all mirrors and even out of the rear window of my car and was somewhat surprised that despite trying very hard to see it where I felt it should appear I was not able to locate it at all.

I wish that I had stopped right away and jumped out for a better view of the whole sky but admit that I was a bit freaked out for a moment and chose to only slow down to look from inside of the car instead. I felt that I should still have been able to see it above and behind the car through the rear window if it maintained the same track and speed after passing out of sight above the roof of my car. There were no trees or other significant tall or large objects near this open part of the road that would have obscured it from view.

I felt that with the large, open, clear sky area behind me I should have been able to see it again for some portion of the time which I spent looking back since I slowed right down immediately and looked widely in the area it should have been. There were no other vehicles in the immediate area either behind or ahead of me for about 2-3 kilometers. I never saw the object again.
