NZ Bay of Plenty Monday 13th June 2005 at 2030 hrs off coast of Plate Island travelling to Port Whakatane - Enchanter 22 Charter craft one of board. 5 km ahead of Pursuit six on board charter craft Both skippers noted a large pulsing orb of light no radar contact following both vessels to Port Whakatane this was over a 3 hour period During this time a light appeared on top of the large light and it appeared to fly off along the coastline travelling east along the Ohope beach until it was out of sight. The main light which appeared to be about the size of a house hard to evaluate at night was noted by Pursuit crew to stay over the matata area for the remainder of the night. All seven men we very nervous and had never seen such a strange unexplained object before. Both skippers noted that it was traveling the same speed as their boats. At one time it appeared to come closer to Enchanter and then move away again this was noted by both skippers who were in radio contact all the time. When Enchanter was adjacent to Whale Island the light was on the coast side of the boat and the light just disappeared soon after but Pursuit could still see it now nearer them. They anchored for the remainder of the night on the west side of Whale Island and noted that the light appeared to move nearer Matata and they all thought it hovered over the hills above Matata for the remainder of the night.
