Description: Hi guys. I lived in Christchurch, New Zealand 2010-13 and bore witness to all thirteen-thousand seismic episodes during that period. The first of which occurred at 4:35am on September 22nd, 2010.
Being in the early hours with a power shortage, and overcast skies, there was very little light available, other than the ambient natural light. About ten minutes after the initial 7.1 magnitude quake I was standing on my front porch facing north when something flew over me. The only reason I've decided to tell you guys is the bit about "falling leaf, pendulum motion", as this is what I noticed. My first sight of the thing, it was travelling north (my mother's house in Broomfield at the south-western end of the city faces north/north-west), over the house and kept going slowly and steadily in a northerly direction. It was silent, silhouetted black and oval in shape - much like a surfboard travelling along its shortest axis.
About halfway between above Mum's house and the houses across the road it began this pendulum motion, east to west, as if it were suspended from an invisible apex about the same distance above as its maximum length - which appeared to be anywhere between ten and one hundred metres - then disappeared. I had never seen anything like it previously nor have I since.
It wasn't an hallucination, I wasn't drunk, high or overtly affected by adrenal response from the quake. Any ideas?
