UFO Sighting Report - United Kingdom

Please note that the reports in this section have been submitted to UFOINFO/UFO ROUNDUP and accepted in good faith. No investigation has been carried out by UFOINFO.

With the increasing use of digital cameras we are seeing more photos showing alleged 'UFOs' - many of these could be insects, cloud shapes etc. As many readers have asked to see the photos I will be using some of them and leaving it up to the individual to make up their own mind - John @ UFOINFO.

Detailed description of sighting

I was travelling back to my parents house with my wife, following a party. I was driving and had not been drinking!
We were travelling north along the A227 through Meopham in Kent. When we reached Meopham School (see attached diagram) I spotted a couple of orange lights in the top right hand corner of my windscreen. I asked my wife if she could see them and if she knew what they were. She thought that they were probably reflections from the street lights (which were the orange type). I lost sight of them shortly afterwards, as they were above the car.

Further along the road, we turned right (towards Camer) and I spotted the lights again through my drivers side window. I was really curious now and turned back up the A227 to stop the car alongside a parade of shops (marked X on the map). I got out of the car and stood with a man who had just finished work at the local indian restaurant. We watched the objects for a few minutes trying to work out what they might be. Fortunately, having been to a party, I had the camera with me so I took a couple of pictures. They are not great, but you can see the objects in a line across the clear night sky.

There were a series of orange glowing objects moving slowly across the sky. They were in a fairly straight line, and seemed to be generally quite evenly spaced. There were some gaps in the line, but there were quite a lot of objects in total. I didn't count them all, but I estimate that in the time that I was watching them I saw about 15 or so. They appeared to be moving slowly, and seemed to be quite low. My guess is that they were travelling at the speed of a small light aircraft. It was difficult to assess their altitude, but they did not appear to be very high.

At one point, one of the objects appeared to break up and fall to earth in at least two bits. I would guess that it would have been over Shipley Hills on the map. Again, it was difficult to judge distances, so this might not be an entirely accurate estimate.

I work in the aerospace industry, and I can't ever recall seeing anything quite like this before. They were certainly not aircraft. They were too slow and glowed too consistently to be any form of firework. If anyone has any ideas what it might be, I'd be really interested to find out!

Colour, Shape and other Descriptions

Orange and glowing. Appeared to be diamond shaped, but I'm not certain of this. No noise.

Estimated height and speed(s) of approach and departure: Hard to be certain, but they appeared to be low (say <5000ft) and slow (say <150kt).

Reported by media: Not to my knowledge, although there is another report on your site from Monmouth that sounds similar in some ways.

[The description of the objects sounds very much like UFO/fire balloons. The break up and falling to earth of one object seems to support this - John @ UFOINFO.

Update:

I wrote to the witness suggesting that there is a very strong possibility that what he saw were what is known as UFO/fire balloons and to have a look at http://www.ufoballoons.co.uk.

He replied "Thanks for your response. I'm fairly sure that you're correct and that I did in fact see UFO balloons. I never realised such things existed! It was also a very clear and still night, which seems to be when these UFO balloons are most effective. My parents said there were fireworks during the evening, so this may have been something that was used to finish the display."

Second Update:

The following brief message was received on October 7th 2006.

We were very interested to read the sighting of UFO's over Meopham on the 10th of September.

Just to let you know these were Thai lanterns set off as a celebration at the end of our wedding.

Sorry.

[UFOINFO thanks Rob for sending in the photos and confirmation of what the lights were.]
