Follow-up information from Brian Vike:

Since writing to you, I put the information on a web page http://www.mytangledweb.co.uk/ufo.htm after a colleague found a description of a similar sighting over Nelson, Lancashire, in May.

I will try and give you more detail . The attached images have not been edited for obvious reasons. [Note: The images (below) have been reduced in size for the UFOINFO site.]

Rotherham, South Yorkshire UK Sunday 6th June, 2004 at 18.14.

It had been a hot sunny day with clear skies. Only a few minutes before the sighting, I had taken a photo of a rainbow over the south of Rotherham.

I had my camera with me and heard my neighbours talking and looking at something in the sky. My initial thoughts were that it was a hot air balloon. It was moving at a speed, I would expect to see a hot air baloon travel.

It was moving from W to E through the sky, see diagram. It didnt go higher or lower. After taking the shots and knowing this was not a hot air balloon, it was much further away than I would expect to see a balloon. I went to get my binoculars , it had gone from sight 30 seconds later.

It looked like a black line in the sky - about 2.5 centimeters in length. The following description is exactly how I would describe it (My object was moving though !) : - The following is from http://www.ufoinfo.com/sightings/index.shtml Info website

On Saturday, May 22, 2004, at 3 p.m., Bill and Margo Wells and their two grandchildren were having a picnic on the shore of the Walverden Reservoir near Nelson, Lancashire, UK when they spotted something unusual in the sky approaching from the west. "There were four people seeing this," Bill reported, "Two adults and two children. We were having a picnic on the bank of Walverden Reservoir when our eldest grandchild said, 'Look at that stick in the sky!'" "And this is just what it looked like--a black line in the sky, like a stick. It was stationary, not moving except to turn slightly or go slower. The 'stick' was a diagonal line going from left to right.

It was about one inch (2.5 centimeters) long in the sky. We continued to watch it for about 20 to 30 minutes, and then it turned to the east, or went shorter and vanished." The object's "height was deceptive because it was a lot bigger than a plane would be at the same distance."

After magnifying the images, it became obvious that on the 2nd image debris had broken away and appears as 2 black spots above and to the left of the black line. Refer to http://www.mytangledweb.co.uk/5a.jpg

Hope this helps
