September 30th 2007 : Netley Abbey, Southampton, Hampshire, England
UFOINFO Sighting Form Report
Location: Netley Abbey Southampton Hampshire England
Date: 09/30/2007 local time 1940hrs
Approach Direction: North to South
Departure Direction: to the South
Witness Direction: West
Description: 9 friends & family members firstly saw 3 lights travel over my house. Whilst watching them a further 4 lights appeared from the horizon - all travelling in the same direction. large tree obstructed our view and they did not reappear. we think there was low cloud.
Color/Shape: Burnt orange/Yellow in colour. Round circular in shape
Height & Speed: Quite low. not the hieght of usual aircraft. Movement slower than aircraft. Appeared to be 'bobbing' slightly and although in line they appeared to be independant of each other.
TV/Radio/Press: We did not report the sighting. But did phone the local paper to see if anyone else had seen/reported it. They havent. The paper seemed keen to do a feature but we as a family are just interested in what we've seen and if there is any reasonable explaination.
UFOINFO Note: As with other similar reports I asked the witness to have a look at the UFO Balloons website to see if this is what might have been seen and received the following reply:
Thanks for taking an interest in our sighting. Of course it's all we have been talking about since Sunday!
I have viewed the images you've sent me and I can easily see why we could have mistaken the lights for lanterns or balloons. In fact the suggestion was bought up at the time and immediately quashed by all of the persons present (ages ranging from 12 to 70, and nine of us in total). My reasons for this are the 'Orbs' were of a solid consistency, they did not 'flicker' Whilst not as fast as aircraft, they did not 'float' in the manor of a lantern or balloon.
They appeared to have a direct path and had an orderly formation. One thing I haven't mentioned before (because I don't thing it will be much help) my nephew managed to grab a camera and take a couple of shots. But the camera is so old, not digital, (and belongs to an old person) so I am not expecting any great results.
I have been in touch with my local UFO society who are researching our sighting. They interestingly also had another sighting reported within 20mins > half an hour of ours from Bursledon (a village approx 2 miles away) That was a report of only 3 lights. The society has also mentioned the lantern theory, but thankfully are keeping an open mind and are not treating me as a 'nut nut' as most people seem to be doing.
I also phoned the local press the day after and they had no reports. But seemed more interested in my family doing a press feature than investigating what this could have been.
My husband & I work for the Police locally and have asked if anything was reported, but that was negative.
In conclusion, I don't know what it is that we witnessed that night. All I know is the it was magnificent. mystifying, and nothing that I have experience before. And I think I can speak for 9 people.
