Weather Conditions: Clear, high thin clouds

Description: We were sitting outside last night waiting for the show that that the bats normally treat us to when directly south of hour house, I saw, what I thought were 2 planes approaching - as, from first sight, I believed it was them coming over the horizon (of my vista), I commented that they looked quite close, my wife looked and concurred. Then a third objject appeared. As be both stood up, we used a lampost as a point of reference. One light seemed to diminish, but as it did so, it dipped in altitude. After a few seconds, the second one did the same and then shortly after the third did.

We were a bit shocked. Anyway, we sat down and discussed it and wihin a few minutes - perhaps 10 or so, 2 lights appeared and went through the same ritual - using the lamp post as reference, they had moved slightly to the west. After another 10 minutes of so, just one light appeared, this remained for some time slowly moving westerly before disappearin. I have thought that perhaps they were baloonists, but at this time, it was quite dark - would baloonists be out - and ascending at that time? Seems the only logical explanation.
