Weather Conditions: Bright low dawn sunshine, blue sky, thin high clouds

Description: Looking out of my kitchen window in a south easterly direction, I noticed a silver cigar shaped object visible over the roofline of the next door house. At first I thought nothing of it, assuming it to be an aircraft. However, I then noticed that it was not moving but hovering. The object appeared to be at a distance, I would estimate some miles from me. No vapour trail was evident.

After observing the object for 30 seconds or so, It disappeared downwards (from my point of view, below the adjoining roofline) almost instantaneously; the acceleration of the object was amazing. I continued to watch for some 5 more minutes but the object did not reappear.
