February 24th 1999 : Hull and East Coast of England

Great Balls Of Fire

Hull and East Coast Sightings
24th February 1999

Sean Tierney

(HUFOS INVESTIGATOR)

The following article was submitted by Chris Evers and is taken from the April 1999 issue of Faster Than Light.

We arrived at my son, Sean’s school, Archbishop Thurstan, on Wednesday 24th February, for an option’s evening. The school is situated in the east of Hull, on the Greatfield Estate. We entered the back gates from Taylor Avenue, no sooner had we turned around the corner, when we were blinded by a torch light, as a shadowy figure approached us and asked “where are you going?”, I replied, “It’s my sons option evening.” The shadowy figure then said “I’m the janitor, the gates are locked, if you wait here I'll just lock the gates you have just come through, then I’ll take you round!”

As the janitor walked off, Vicki, my son, Sean and I looked up to the stars. It was a clear, cold night, with a 3/4 Moon lighting up everything around, you could easily see the Plough and Orion’s Belt, there was not one cloud in sight. I turned around to the North/West and pointed out the conjunction of the planets to my son, I also told him it would be another 83 years before they would line up like this again.

By this time the janitor had returned to let us through the first gate. Upon entering the gate Vicki said “Sean look at that!”, I immediately turned and looked up and said, “It’s just a plane”, Vicki said “Not that this”, she was pointing lower down. Sure enough there were two balls of light, slowly moving from our right to our left. I immediately looked behind me, the planets were in the same place, so no one can say we mistook them for what we were observing now. I glanced down at my watch, it was 6:24pm.

BALLS OF LIGHT

While Vicki, Sean and the janitor looked at the balls of light, I searched the sky for clues. I could see three high flying passenger jets, the navigation lights, the fuselage and the wings were all visible. I could make all this detail out on these craft so high up, but I could not hear or see anything between these balls of light, which were much lower down.

The one on the left was in the 9 o’clock position, while the other one was about 2 - 3 inches away, in the 4 o’clock position. Both balls were a bright white headlight, type of colour, the one on the right had a reddish glow on the right hand side of it, a bit like a crescent on a new Moon. There was no noise, no jet streams, nothing. We could not make out if these lights belonged to one or were two seperate objects. At one point it seemed to rise up and then move off to the left, in a Northern direction. We watched these objects for a good 5 - 6 minutes, before we lost them in the street lights nearby.

When we returned home my answer machine was flashing, sure enough somebody else had also seen it. They lived in the Marfleet Lane area, which is not far from the location of our sighting. “We saw 2 UFO’s, 600 - 1,000ft up, we could see them from Hedon Road, Greatfield Estate and the Tower Grange Police Station, then we lost sight of them heading towards the East Coast and the Hornsea area”, the message said.

RADIO HUMBERSIDE

The next day I joined a phone in on BBC Radio Humberside, in an attempt to gather more information. No sooner had I been on air, and replaced my handset, my telephone started to ring, it did not stop for the next three hours.

The first caller was from Parthian Road, again on the Greatfield Estate, he and a couple of his neighbours say they saw this thing at 6:30pm, heading off in a Northerly direction. No sooner had I put the telephone down, it rang again, this time a lady who was driving home from Safeway’s, with a friend via the Hedon by-pass, she also saw it at 6:30pm and said “It was not a plane, but it looked like the one in front was towing the one behind.”

SIGHTINGS IN GRIMSBY & CLEETHORPES

My next witness was from the Cleethorpes area, she describes “Two diamond shapes with blue lights on the underside of it.” She also goes on to inform me, that she had a 35mm camera handy, and decided to try and take some photographs of the object.” Whether or not these will come out only time will tell, but if they do....boy is this going to be big! My next caller was also from the South of the Humber, Grimsby to be precise, he saw the same two balls of light with one difference, the gap between the balls of light was not measured in inches, he compared it to the size of two double-decker buses. This witness confirms the time at 6:26pm and also the flight path of the object from Grimsby to Cleethorpes and then onto Hull.

LATER SIGHTINGS

Now the calls from then on started to have a slight twist to them as the times varied to ours. This does not mean to say that they have not seen something, wether its the same object as ours or not, only time and a good bit of investigation will tell.

“9:00pm” said the next caller from Easington, was the next sighting reported to me. He described the same two lights, “Moving slowly from the West to the East, with about an inch, to one and a half inch gap between them both. They were both yellow whitish in colour, no flashing lights, they seemed to move following the coastline. It was strange indeed!”

Back to Cleethorpes again, a man phoned to tell me he thought it was “Two helicopters or planes, Orange - Yellowy in colour, about 1000ft (approx.) up.

I also saw what I can only describe as portholes, 10 or 12 of the things, But this could not be a plane because the portholes appeared to be in the wings of the object!”

The next call was from further North along the coast, from Flamborough, she told me that her husband and herself had seen the very same object/s two weeks earlier. They described “Two lights moving towards us, no sound, no object between the lights, nothing. Further out over the Humber, we could clearly see a military plane in the distance, we could make out all of the features of this aircraft, but not the balls of light. It was very strange indeed!”

A caller from Willerby, a suburb of Hull, tells me “At 6:30 - 7:00pm, I witnessed four lights moving from West to East in close formation. They were about 1 - 2 inches apart. I took my pair of binoculars, they are 7 - 15 times magnification, all I could see of the lights was a distorted glow, even with full magnification!”

From Patrington, a young lady says “I witnessd two white lights, 3 - 4 weeks ago, it was very low, there was no noise, it was a very clear night, and before you say anything it was NOT the planets meeting in conjunction with each other!”

Across the city at Bricknell Avenue, “It was 9:15pm, what I saw was massive, there was no sound and at first I thought it was a balloon. It was white and round in shape, almost disc shaped, I’d estimate it to be as big as a bus. It was approximately 1000ft high and travelling at about 40m.p.h. I witnessed it for about 2 - 3 minutes.

Meanwhile over at Thorngumbald, my next witness told me, “I was out jogging at about 9:10pm. It was a clear night, and as I was running, I was looking at the stars. As I looked up I happened to see something moving, 200 - 300 yards above my head. I stopped and looked up at it for about 5 minutes. There was no sound, no flashing lights, no shape!”

He continued, “This object was not a plane, nor blimp, nor helicopter, it was just moving too slowly. I then started to get goose pimples and ran off glancing backwards occasionally. From what I can make out the lights were green, red, but mainly a non - flashing, blinding white light. It was about 80 - 100ft across, from light to light. It moved off in a southerly direction and at one point it seemed to backtrack on itself as though it was searching for something.”

MORE FROM CLEETHORPES

“At 6:45pm, I saw the objects through my binoculars,” a Cleethorpes man reports, I thought it was a Chinnook helicopter or something simillar because I could make out several of what I thought were windows. There seemed to be a row of white lights in these windows, that is except the end one which appeared to be green in colour. The only thing is it appeared to be travelling too slow to be an aircraft of any kind, and there was virtually no sound, apart from a slight hum. That’s the thing I can’t understand, helicopters are very noisy and so are planes travelling at that kind of speed!”

NO VAPOUR TRAILS

A call from a nervous proffessional person desribes “I was in my car on the way to work approaching the Ganstead roundabout, on the outskirts of East Hull, at about 9:00 - 9:10pm. I could see it was a clear night, when I happened to see two white lights about three inches apart, moving very slowly. The lights had the appearance of a very bright light bulb. They seemed to be to far apart to be an aircraft, there was no flashing lights either. By the time I drove off the roundabout, pulled up and got out of my car, the object had disappeared.”

At about the same time, another witness, over two miles away in the Hedon road area, stopped her car, got out and describes seeing, “Two lights moving very slowly, very low down. There was no sound or vapour trails. It was about 9:10 - 9:15pm, we could see one red flashing light and three or four white lights on the side of the object, we thought that these were windows! The white lights looked to be about as bright as a cars dipped headlights. It seemed to move off towards the Thorngumbald area.”

RAF WADDINGTON

As soon as these sightings were reported, Vicki and I sent out sighting report forms, with stamped addressed letters to all of the witnesses. Now all we had to do was wait for the information to come back to us. I also sent out a letter to RAF Waddington, Humberside Airport and to the Humberside Police, to see if they could assist with our inquiries, whether or not I would receive a reply would be another matter!

<>Well, what a surprise, I did get a reply from the Royal Air Force, Waddington. They tell me, “I have checked with our Air Traffic Control and unfortunately they have nothing logged, ( Not that they’d tell us anyway! ). Although they operate a 24 hour shift system, they are not controlling unless they are notified of air traffic in our air space. We always log any reports that we receive, and they are passed on to the M.O.D. “UFO” desk. We have forwarded a copy of your letter to them so they should acknwledge your letter. They will check known aircraft movements in the area, generally try to eliminate all possibilities, and investigate any other factors that may be relevant.”

SIGHTINGS GALORE

Sightings are still being reported even as I write this report. A phone call from a woman living in Hull, who did not want to fill out a sighting report form, confirms a “Sighting of two whitish coloured balls of light just above the roof tops, on Monday, 26 February at 6:45pm. The balls of light were at the twenty five minutes past eleven kind of angle, they were headlight like brightness, there was no flashing lights, it was a clear night and I could see, what I thought to be a helicopter above it. This sighting had nothing to do with the planets meeting as they were behind me.” the twenty five minutes past eleven kind of angle, they were headlight like brightness, there was no flashing lights, it was a clear night and I could see, what I thought to be a helicopter above it. This sighting had nothing to do with the planets meeting as they were behind me.”

Not all callers believe that they have seen a UFO, extraterrestrial or not! Some of the callers were confusing the sighting with the conjunction of the planets, whilst others were convinced that they were, “Two anti collision lights,” says a caller from the Priory Road area of Hull, “They were low down over the other side of the river,” claims the aviation freak, ( his words, not mine!), both lights were one and the same craft, a helicopter, I think, about 1000 - 1500ft high,” when I asked him about the lack of noise, he replied “There would have been noise, but no one would have heard it because of the noise from the city!” If that is so, why is it everyone can hear the Humberside Police helicopter?

Another explanation for this sighting, according to a caller from Barton-on-Humber, “The two lights were two F117 Stealth aircraft!”, “But at the speed these two lights were travelling,” I told him, “any type of aircraft would have fallen from the sky.”

Two more phone calls just in, one from the Stepney Lane/Beverley Road area, of the City, claims to have seen the following, “It was a clear night and while we were out looking at the planets, two strange balls of light moved from the West to the East, very slowly. It was definitely not a plane, helicopter, shooting stars or the Mir space station.”

“Tuesday, 23 February,” my next witness claims to have seen, “Two car headlight type, white balls of light. They were about the size of a two pence piece, spread apart by about 2 - 3 inches. There was no flashing lights, like you would normally see on an aircraft. They were in the six o’clock position, then they rotated anti - clockwise to the quarter past nine position. They entered a cloud and I lost sight of them! There was no noise and I was looking towards the East.” This witness wished to remain anonymous, and did not fill out a sightng report form.

INTERVIEW WITH A WITNESS

Quite recently, Darren Parr, Vicki and I travelled to interview the witness in Cleethorpes, who claimed to have photographed the strange objects. We asked her a number of questions, several of which are here related.

DESCRIBE IN YOUR OWN WORD’S WHAT, WHERE AND WHEN YOU SAW THE SIGHTING?

She replied “My daughter was on the telephone and she said, “Look at them lights!”, because she was looking at the planets, Jupiter and Venus. We saw these lights approaching through the window, so we had to go outside and have a look. We could see from the back door these, just HUGE LIGHTS! So then we ran and got the camera and waited for.......... There was no noise, there was nothing just these two lights and as it started approaching, I noticed that there was something strange about it and as they came overhead, we saw the shape and that’s when we took the pictures. We saw the light’s underneath..... There was just no noise!”

DID THEY HAVE ANY COLOUR?

Yellowy Gold..... They had a glow, like they were pushing out the atmosphere from around them. What I did think they were, were Stealth Bombers because of the size of them, but they seemed to be travelling so slow, really, really, slow. They were directly over us and that is what we saw.”

AND WHAT TIME WAS THIS?

“I’m not sure really, but I’d say 20 - half past six. She’d (her daughter), phoned a friend about school homework, she was also telling her about the planets, which we’d been watching for the last few days, so we knew that the planets were there, (POINTING NORTH - WEST), while these lights were here, (POINTING SOUTH - WEST), heading this way, (POINTING NORTH - EAST). We watched the planets for 30 - 90 minutes most nights, they were very interesting. So when she was telling her friend, that’s when we saw these other lights, THESE MOVING LIGHTS!”

DID YOU HEAR ANY SOUND ASSOCIATED WITH YOUR SIGHTING’S?

“No.”

WAS MORE THAN ONE OBJECT OBSERVED? IF SO HOW MANY?

“Two.”

WAS A PATTERN OR FORMATION OBSERVED?

“They just seemed to move in a straight line. I assumed that they were investigating the planet!”

WERE THE SHAPES YOU WITNESSED THE SAME DISTANCE APART AT ALL TIMES?

I’d say yes, yes they were level and they were together,”

WAS ANY PHOTOGRAPHIC RECORD MADE OF THE SIGHTING? IF YES, STATE WHAT FORM?

“Yes, as I’ve already told you, I took six photographs of these objects, one negative has gone, three have been classed as fogged and I am unsure of two others on the film.”

WHAT TYPE OF CAMERA DO YOU HAVE?

“A Pentax PC - 100.”

WAS THE OBJCT BRIGHTER THAN THE SKY BACKGROUND?

“Yes.”

DID THE OBJECT APPEAR TO BE SOLID?

“Yes.”

ESTIMATE THE SPEED OF THE OBJECT WHEN COMPARED WITH THE FOLLOWING: HOT AIR BALLOON-HANG GLIDER 0-50 MPH, LIGHT AEROPLANE 50-250 MPH, HIGH FLYING PASSENGER JET 250-500 MPH, MILITARY JET FIGHTER 500-2000 MPH?

“Hot air balloon, it wasn’t very fast.”

HOW BIG WAS THE OBJECT YOU SAW?

“When they were overhead, each one was about as big as our lamp shade, (ABOUT 12” x 4”), side by side.”

SO WHEN YOU TOOK THE PHOTOGRAPHS DID YOU MANAGE TO GET BOTH OBJECTS IN THE VIEWFINDER?

“Yeap, they were right above me, I goy both of them in the frame.”

HOW FAR DID THE OBJECT APPEAR FROM YOUR POSITION, 1/4 MILE, 1MILE, 5 MILES, OTHER?

“I honestly couldn’t tell you.”

DID THE OUTLINE OF THE OR ANY PART OF THE OBJECT APPEAR SHARP, FUZZY, TRANSPARENT, STRUCTURED OR DETATCHED?

“Structured.”

WHAT WERE YOUR FEELINGS AS YOU OBSERVED THE UFO?

“Panic and calm.”

DO YOU BELIEVE IN UFOs, PARANORMAL ETC?

“I don’t dispute it. I’ve not really thought about it. This is my first kind of experience of anything of this kind.”

This just about concluded the interview.

We asked if we could borrow the negatives, she said “Yes, as long as we don’t lose them.” We left her house hoping that a friend of ours might be able to throw some light on these strange looking negatives.

We took the negatives to our friend on Monday, March 8, the manager and camera expert at a local photographers shop here in Hull.

FOGGED NEGATIVES

He looked them over and noticed discoloration and told us, “this can only happen in one of two ways: the first is by X-ray radiation, the type found in X-ray machines, Hospitals, Airports, etc... The second and most likely cause, I think, is that some one as opened the back of the camera at one time, which in some cameras resets the counter to zero. The person has then taken pictures until the film seems to wind back prematurely, the back is then opened again, and as light floods the film the image is polluted and you will get an image like this.”

He then went into the back of the shop and produced several examples of overexposed pictures.

He continued, “The Blue and Pink one is, I’m afraid an exposure of the grips on the bottom of the negative. I’m sorry, I was really looking forward to seeing these photographs, but I’m afraid it’s all down to over exposure, if there was something there, the image has been lost.”

So it looks like we may have lost the photographic evidence, but who needs it! While it is nice to have video and photographic evidence, it is not as strong as people from other sides of the country or even the world, sighting the very same object. As long as people are willing to come forward and have their say, the trurh cannot be hid away.

The strange thing about all these sightings is that they all seem to concern two white balls of light, no part of the crafts(s), were seen yet the witnesses could clearly see and identify other high flying aeroplanes.

Everyone cannot be wrong, up to the 8th March 1999, we have 39 witnesses come forward, all of which tell just about the same story. They are from all over the region and from all walks of life, most of them have never seen anything like this before and most were afraid to come forward in fear of ridicule.

So my hand goes out to all of those who assisted, even if it was only over the phone. Information can help to solve things, especially when you have a lot of different witnesses come forward, all telling the same story. Think about it!

UPDATE, GREAT BALLS OF FIRE 24/2/99

I received a standard letter from the M.O.D. cocerning the lights seen on the 24 February 1999. It says, “The M.O.D. examines any UFO reports only to establish whether they are a defence significance. Unless there is evidence of a potential threat to the U.K. by an external military source, ‘to date no UFO report has revealed such evidence’, we do not try to establish th nature of the sighting”. They went on to say “We believe that rational explanations, such as aircraft lights, natural phenomena could be found for them (if resource were diverted for this purpose).”

“With regard to your particular observation, I have looked through our sighting report files (SO THEY DO KEEP SIGHTING REPORT FILES... Ed) and can confirm that we received no other reports of ‘UFO’ sightings for 24 February, from anywhere in the North of England, and we are satisfied that there is no corroborating evidence to suggest that the UK’s airspace was breached by unauthorised military aircraft.”

On the same day as receiving this letter, I also received a telephone call from the Humberside Police force. He said “All we do is log all sighting’s reported to us. They are then passed on to the M.O.D., I can give you their telephone number if you want?”

I replied “I already have it, in a reply to the letter I sent them! Do you know we have now had 41 sightings, reported to us, from all over the region, everyone can not be wrong!”

He replied “Oh well, it’s been passed on now so they will deal with it.”

This is the way the telephone conversation ended, to me, he seemed to be ‘PROGRAMMED’ to respond this way!

YET MORE WITNESSES

Just when I thought it couldn’t get any stranger, I received telephone call number 45, concerning this case, from a lady living in Bridlington who tells me, “On Wednesday, 24 February, at 21:05 hrs, I saw what I can only describe as ‘Two Diamond Shaped Shadows’, they seemed to be intergrated. They were very big, there was about 4 or 6 lights between the objects. At first I believed it to be an aircraft, but these were that close together, they were almost touching. I telephoned the Coast Guard to see if they had also witnessed these objects.”

He replied “I saw nothing, as I was looking the other way!”

It seems strange that all 45 witnesses have seen something and yet THE AUTHORITIES, have not.
As the M.O.D. clearly states, “We have looked through our sighting report files and can confirm that we received no other reports of ‘UFO’ sightings for the 24 February, from anywhere in the North of England (OK! so what about the South of the country...Ed), and we are satisfied that there is no corroborating evidence to suggest that the UK’s airspace was BREACHED by unauthorised military aircraft.”(So this means then the the 45 witnesses all witnessed an authorised military aircraft, of a type not generally recognised by the general public???...Ed)

DIAMOND SHAPED CRAFT

If this is so, then how come we have witnesses from places as far apart as Grimsby-Cleethorpes, Hull and as far North as Bridlington, all unknown to one another, all seeing an actual structured ‘Diamond Shaped Craft’, as for most witnesses seeing ‘Balls of Light’, they might have been looking at the same ‘Diamond Shaped Craft’, but where in fact too far away from the craft to see detail. I now intend to write back to the M.O.D. In an attempt to get a more substantial answer to the strange events described above, when or if I get a reply, you will be the first to know, so watch this space.
