UFOINFO Sighting Form Report
Location: Ten miles north of Grand Forks, North Dakota
Date: 09/01/2005 9:15 CST
Approach Direction: North
Departure Direction: East
Witness Direction: South
Description: On September 1, 2005 at 9:15 p.m. I walked outside of my house facing south and noticed a brightly lit star like object low in the night sky. I assumed it was an aircraft with it's landing lights on since it was coming towards me from the direction of the airport to the south 8 miles. The object made an abrupt upward elevation change that caught my attention. It was very difficult for my eyes to focus on the light for some reason. The object made 2 more quick elevation changes as it approached closer. At this point our normally mellow cat was getting very agitated and was crying and pushing up against me. The object quickly turned and banked to the south-west. As it banked I could see the bottom side of the craft which was dark with the exception of three soft white lights in a triangular arrangement and a red light in the center. The size of the object as it appeared from the bottom was about half the size of a dime at arms length. My impression of the shape was that it was an equilateral triangle. I was able to view the bottom side for only 2 or 3 seconds before it headed to the south-west.
I quickly went into the house and grabbed my digital camera. When I came outside again the object was heading north-east towards me. As the object maneuvered to the east I noticed a glint of bright light similar to a headlight beam sweeping the sky as it turned. I could not make out a seperate light source from the main bluish-white object though. At this point I was ready to take some pictures. I was dissapointed that I could not make out the object on the camera's LCD veiw finder. So I proceeded to point and shoot the best I could under the circumstances. I was able to take seven shots before the object quickly dissapeared into the eastern clear night sky. Unfortunately I was only able to get 1 frame with the object in sight. The object appeared on the fifth frame as a bluish orb with a trace of pink on the leading edge of the object. A rough estimate of the size of the object based on a photo I took of a full moon the following night, would make it 1/3 the size of a full moon from my vantage point. There was no sound at all from the object. I have lived in this area for over 30 years and am very familar with aircraft flying around the area. I am very close to the airport (8 miles) and within 20 miles of the Airforce base. I am keeping an open mind as to what it could be.
Color/Shape: The object looked like a bright star from the side and was bluish/white in color. The bottom of the craft was dark and had three white lights in a triangle pattern and red light in the center. It also had a very bright forward shining white light.
Height & Speed: Height unknown, object was about 60 degrees up from horizon as it headed east. Speed, after it turned east I snapped seven pictures as fast as I could before it dissapeared into the clear night sky. I timed how long it would take to click off that many shots and it was 30 seconds.
Follow-up information form Brian Vike:
I am sending you the photos I took of the object on September 1. The pic labeled ufo 005 is the original and ufo 005.1 is the copyrighted version. I sent you both since it appeared to distort the image slightly when I edited it with the copyright. I am also sending you the 7th and final pic (ufo 007)I took before it disappeared. If you look closely it seems to show one larger orb with two smaller ones next to it. This picture would have been taken as it departed to the east and would be a rear view of the object. I reversed the image colors and it was more apparent. Some of the other pics of the group showed some faint orb shapes in them as well, but this could be attributed to dust in the air or insects. The camera I used was a Nikon Coolpix 775 digital camera with a 3x optical zoom. The camera is a 2.1 megapixel and was set on the medium quality setting. The flash was on and the lens was set at full zoom. I still have the image saved on the memory card as well. The following night I took some pictures to see if I could duplicate the image of the object in any way from known sources such as airplanes, car headlights, moon etc. and I found nothing was even close in appearance. It is fine with me if you want to post the pictures.
" I always like to make sure, how long were you able to observe the object for ?" After the sighting I recall looking at the clock after I entered the house and it was 9:20 pm. I was sure no more than 5 minutes had passed and I would estimate the sighting lasted between 2 and 3 minutes, including the time it took to get the camera (20 seconds).
The airport is called "Grand Forks International Airport (GFK)" and the airbase is the Grand Forks Airforce base. My wife did call the police department the next morning to see if anybody else had reported anything, but they just referred us to contact our local sheriff.
I have been interested in the ufo phenomena for many years myself and have read many books on the subject. I have visited your web site before and like what you are doing. I tried to be objective in this sighting report and weigh in other possibilities. Some of the things that made me think it was not a normal aircraft were: The abrupt altitude changes I witnessed, the lack of conventional aircraft lighting, the intense blue-white light from the upper portion of the craft, the speed at which it disappeared into the horizon, the lack of any sound considering how close it was (est. 1 to 2 miles) and the fact that my eyes were unable to focus on the intense light from the front of the craft as it approached. The one thing that stood out to me that seemed somewhat conventional was when it turned it banked like a regular airplane, but faster than a normal jet would maneuver. I have read of many sightings of triangle shaped craft, but I do not recall any that appeared as a bright light from the side view. I had two other sightings over 20 years ago. The one was similar in the fact that they were bright star like objects moving in the sky in formation and were making abrupt 90 degree turns and were disappearing into the sky as if they were leaving the atmosphere. I would be interested in hearing your thoughts on this if you have time. Thanks
