Description: Circa July 1974, I was out in a rural area in southern Indiana on SR 46, near Belmont, IN, at about 10:00pm, riding my motorcycle eastbound towards Nashville, IN. The sky was clear, with the stars out. I saw what appeared to be a searchlight on an aircraft in the distance about 1 - 2 miles away over a ridgeline. This was like a searchlight slung underneath a helicopter, at about 100' AGL, traveling north along the ridgeline. I thought it was a searchlight, because I could see a shaft of light from the source to the ground.

I slowed the motorcycle and pulled off of the road to the shoulder, shut off the bike and removed my helmet. I thought, if the police are searching for something or someone, I didn't want to ride into the scene. I watched the light pause in one location and then reverse direction and head back south along the ridgeline. There was no sound whatsoever, which I thought was very odd. I watched it for a good 5 minutes or so. The bright light then changed direction again and headed WSW, towards me but to the south of me, over a large flat farm field and from my position, it appeared to move along slowly for about 2 - 3 minutes, for what appeared to be about 1500 to 2000 yds.

It then stopped just before it was due south of me and it then started going vertically, straight up and at a great rate of speed, until it was the size of a large star after about 20 - 30 seconds and it continued going outward from Earth, until it was the size of the faintest star I could see and then it disappeared, my eyes couldn't resolve it anymore. It was interesting to watch it smoothly shrink in diameter as it left our atmosphere. The light was just a bright white light. No sound whatsoever.

I re-started the motorcycle and did a U-turn and rode back home in Bloomington, IN. I called a friend and asked to come over and talk about something. I proceeded to his residence, a house which was shared with other university students. I carefully recounted my story and one of the guys had a Land Rover. He offered to take me out to the ridgeline during daylight and we could have a look around. Interestingly, no one ridiculed me that night.

The next morning I came back and we took the Land Rover out SR 46 and I found where I had pulled off the road the night before and identified the ridgeline where I saw the light. We drove further and found an access trail and took the 4-wheeler in there. We wandered back along the base of the ridge and found a place to winch our vehicle up a steep slope. We get to the top of the ridge and parked the vehicle. We got out and looked around and quickly found an open spot on the ridge where there were no trees, that the natural growth grass and plant life had been flattened into a perfect circle and all the plant shafts were laying flat in a uniform fashion, like they were spiraled in. We also found 3 distinct imprint points, equidistant from the center of the flattened circular pattern, like what a craft with some weight would leave behind if it touched down.

To say we were astonished is an understatement! We sat down for a few minutes and tried to digest what we had found and tie it to my sighting the night before. I decided not to contact authorities, as I had no proof of the UFO sighting from the night before and they would probably just assume we made the plant life impression an 3 imprint contact points. No camera, no video... just my clear memory and recollection of the facts.

Over the last, almost 40 years, I have only shared this experience with a few friends that knew me well enough to know, I wasn't making this up.

A little on my background. I'm a single engine land private pilot, so I know fixed wing and rotary wing aircraft. This wasn't one of those aircraft types, I'm certain of it. I can't explain the sighting, from what I know and have been trained in. I also have a science degree from Indiana University and have worked in a high tech field for 35 years. I am also an amateur astronomer, since high school.
